Solar ventilation and cooling fans are available in many different sizes. They are rated in cfm, or cubic feet per minute of air flow. Our small solar vent fans move about 10 cfm. They are perfect for circulating air and controlling humidity and odors in confined spaces like boat cabins and RVs. Solar-only models will work only when the sun is out, day-and-night models charge batteries during the day to provide continuous ventilation day and night. Tip: For good ventilation of a closed space, make sure you have adequate vents for incoming replacement air.
Fans that move hundreds of cfm are used to cool attic spaces to help lower home cooling costs in the summer. For this application, it's usually recommended to install a fan that can move between 10-15 air changes per hour from the attic.
An air change per hour means that the whole volume of the room is removed once per hour. For example, if your room is 1000 cubic feet, a fan that moves 1000 cfm will "change the air" in the room once per minute, or 60 air changes per hour. Tip: To calculate the air changes per hour a fan can provide, just divide the cfm of the fan by the room volume, then multiply by 60.
