Click to enlargeAs the sun rises in a fishing village in Muhuru Bay, Kenya, villagers gather to watch the US election returns on a small laptop and solar energy system.

The laptop was provided by Andrew Cunningham, a Vermonter who is in Kenya as director of a non-profit that is building Muhuru Bay's first girl’s boarding school and research center. WISER (Women's Institute for Secondary Education and Research) is affiliated with Duke University and they hope to begin construction of the school in early 2009 with the first class to be enrolled in January 2010.

"We are watching as the sun rises with all of our solar gear!" Cunningham e-mailed on a BlackBerry handheld wireless device. "The day is historic. And from a rural village in Kenya, I already feel the change."

The solar energy system and laptop provided the power for villagers to be able to see Barack Obama, whose father was born in Kenya, get elected the first African-American President of the United States. They were also able see and hear Barack Obama’s victory speech.

The small solar energy system from Sundance Solar in Warner, NH, is a 50 Watt solar panel connected to a portable power pack, is being used by Mr. Cunningham’s advance team and was designed to provide the power needs of the advance team including laptop, Blackberry and digital camera.
