Solar Energy Beads UV Sensitive Beads change color in the sun

This is a fun and creative way to help demonstrate the effects of UV (ultraviolet light) that comes from the sun. When the uv beads are exposed to light outside, even on cloudy days, they change from white to colors. When you bring them inside, they turn to white. Regular light bulbs do not effect them because they lack UV light.
If you put sunscreen on a bead, you can visibly see the "UV blocking" effects. Experiment with what materials block UV. Includes information and ideas about more experiments. Maybe your son or daughter will invent a new sunscreen! - Makes a great solar educational and "crafty" gift!

Students and Teachers project tip!
These solar beads can demonstrate the effectiveness of sunscreen or UV light blocking medicine bottles. Using an amber colored medicine bottle, place some of the energy beads inside the bottle and keep some exposed in direct sun. You can then show that the medicine bottle has UV blocking effects that protect the medicine from getting damaged by exposure to the sun's UV light. Need another idea? Use sunscreen smeared on clear plastic and put it over the beads. Put them out in the sun. Check the different strengths of suncreeen to see the sun-blocking effects on the beads. Leave some beads exposed to the sun without sunscreen. Have fun!
