Sundance Solar provides solar panels, expertise to aid in NWR’s struggle against White Nose Syndrome

Hopkinton, NH June 17th: Sundance Solar Inc., a company specializing in solar energy products such as solar educational kits, DIY and plug and play kits, has helped National Wildlife Refuge scientists in Washington state power their bat sensors. These sensors help biologists determine the species and habits of bats in the area - information they can use to help fight the spread of the deadly White Nose Syndrome which has been largely responsible for the 80% decline in bat population since its emergence just a few years ago. After NWR scientists worked closely with Sundance Solar to determine the solar requirements and set up of the sensors, several stations are already solar powered with more to come.
Of the company’s role in helping to combat this disease, Sundance Solar intern Jean-Philippe Dubois said, “This is another great example of how solar products can revolutionize the way that we interact with the world around us, powering technologies that help us fight disease, explore new planets, or provide electricity to our own homes. With the help of our solar panels, NWR scientists will be able to get a better understanding of the bat population in the Mid-Columbia River National Wildlife Refuge Complex, and so be able to better combat White Nose Syndrome.”
Jenny Barnett, a Zone I&M Biologist at the Mid-Columbia River location said that they use the panel to recharge the battery that runs the detectors. These detectors are then used to monitor bat activity by recording bat calls every night. “We can tell what species are present and at what time of year they are active.” Photo shows the bat monitor in action at the site.
In addition to this successful endeavor, Sundance has also initiated the following projects intended to expand on their specialized expertise and knowledge of solar energy including:
●Expanding their line of solar educational kits to help educators better advance STEM curriculum in the United States.
●Sending modified versions of the solar educational kits they sell to schools to partner organizations in Africa where children will learn to make solar lanterns that provide necessary lighting where there is not access to electricity while also gaining valuable vocational skills.
