Cell phones can be lifesavers in an emergency situation. But what good are they if the battery has run down? It’s easy to think that you’ll always carry a spare in your briefcase, backpack or car. Or that you’ll always make sure that it’s fully charged before leaving the house. But with busy schedules, those things are just too easy to forget. (And what happens if your full charge or your spare runs out?)
The good news is that solar panel technology has become so advanced that you can actually carry a portable solar panel in your pocket that will deliver enough energy to charge your cell phone battery (as well as the rechargeable battery for your GPS, your MP3 player or your digital camera). You can choose foldable solar panels and rollable solar battery chargers that will not only power up your cell phone, but they can be daisy-chained together to create larger portable solar panel arrays for supplying solar power to additional devices (even your laptop).
Or you can select solar cell phone chargers that are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. They come with adaptor tips that will allow you to recharge your other mobile gadgets, and can deliver about 25 minutes of talk time to your cell phone within about an hour’s worth of exposure to direct sunlight. Of course, if you’d rather spend that hour of sunlight on your iPod, you can listen to about an hour’s worth of music instead.
So if your cell phone is your lifeline, a solar cell phone charger is a necessity. After all, you can’t even rely on being able to recharge your phone in your car if the car’s battery has died. So whether you do a lot of camping, run a mobile office out of your car or are the designated carpool driver for your neighborhood’s kids, a solar cellphone charger should be part of your regular gear.
